Job Description

A typical welder fabricator is tasked with constructing a variety of metal objects. Fitting, setting, and installing fabricated structures. Cutting and welding with a variety of processes. Metal forming, bending, and finishing. Welders read blueprints and drawings; take measurements; plan layouts and procedures; determine what welding equipment and methods to use based on requirements; set-up components to specifications; prepare and align parts for welding; join together components, repair holes and cut through materials using specialized. Fabricators work with blueprints or other printed plans to develop parts for products. They may use machines to put products together and monitor the quality of each assembled part. Most people who work as fabricators have high school diplomas or the GED equivalent.

Job Function/Responsibilities

• Check measurements and dimensions of each piece that’s being worked on with rulers, measuring tapes or squares
• Place each product component in its appropriate spot as noted in the blueprints for proper alignment by using a hammer, pry bar, jack, wedge or another tool
• Mark spots to cut and use tools to manipulate steel, plastic or other materials by cutting, hammering, bending or grinding the work piece
• Employ furnaces or hand torches to heat up materials to make them more flexible for bending or manipulation into the correct specification
• Review blueprints, drawings and other specification papers before starting work on a fabrication process and during the steps to ensure accurate completion
• Maneuver fabrication machines, such as grinders, drill presses, brakes, rolls, shears and flame cutters to cut, bend, grind and adjust materials
• Make templates for common work tasks when conducting repetitive motions for the fabrication process to ensure a set standard of work quality
• Maintain fabricating equipment
• Operate sanders, grinders, saws and drill presses to create aircraft parts
• Adapt machines to craft new parts
• Identify tools and methods needed to construct and assemble components
• Evaluate equipment performance and implement necessary modifications
• Install new wiring and equipment

Job Skills & Qualifications/Requirements

Reqiured:

• High school diploma or a GED equivalent
• At least two years of experience in fabrication
• Ability to comprehend blueprints and work specifications
• Physical ability to lift at least 75 pounds or more
• Advanced knowledge of engineering design and manufacturing procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints.
• Proficiency with metal fabrication tools including shears, rollers, flame cutters, and drill presses.
• Advanced mathematical and engineering skills.
• Ability to lift and manipulate large metal objects.
• Ability to stand for long periods
• Previous work experience as a metal fabricator

Preferred:

• Welding certificate completion
• Understanding of construction tasks and industrial processes
• Excellent color vision and hand dexterity
• Practical knowledge or certification
