SFMP is a 5-year (2014 – 2019) food security project, headquartered in Accra. It seeks to support the government and civil society organizations to rebuild targeted marine fisheries stocks that are a critical food souce in Ghana but current are reaching crisis level of depletion. To address this national food security issue in Ghana, SFMP supports the adoption of sustainable fishing practices and exploitation levels. The project contributes to the Government of Ghana’s fisheries development objectives as well as the US Government’s Feed the Future development objectives of poverty and hunger reduction. The project works closely with government agencies, fisheries authorities, policy makers and fisher folk in the entire coastal area of Ghana to achieve project goals.

Job Description

The USAID Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP) is seeking full time fisheries specialist for a period of 6-9 months to support its policy and field programs who will report directly to the Chief of Party. The position will be based in Accra with regular travel to the coastal Regions. The overarching responsibilities are as follows to oversee and implement the SFMP fisheries support to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) and Fisheries Commission (FC):

Key Roles and Responsibilities

• Coordinate with key MOFAD/FC staff on SFMP operational design of activities to support areas such as fisheries stock assessments, fisheries management, canoe registration, and capacity development.
• Prepare and edit relevant sections of the quarterly progress reports, final project report.
• Coordinate activities conducted with FSSD and MFMD of the Fisheries Commission/MOFAD.
• Schedule and organize workshops and other events related to fisheries assessment, and management, participatory fisheries co­ management, fisheries science and capacity development.

Required Skills or Experience

• Master Degree in fisheries, environmental science, environmental planning, or related field.
