Junior Associate at Atuguba & Associates (A&A)

Role Summary:

Under the Immediate Supervision of the Managing Associate:

  • You will serve as a member of the legal team on various cases undertaken by the Law Firm.
  • You will provide legal services as a lawyer within the employment of the Law Firm.
  • You will assist the Managing Associate of the Law Firm in the execution of cases.
  • You will provide research services as may be required in the execution of case research project(s) of the Group.
  • You may be required to contribute your own views in the sourcing and execution of any case of the Law Firm.
  • You may be required to contribute your own views in the sourcing and execution of any case of the Law Firm.
  • You will assist the Managing Associate to establish strategic goals by gathering pertinent business, financial, service, and operations information; identifying and evaluating trends and options; choosing a course of action; defining objectives; evaluating outcomes.
  • Under the supervision of the Managing Associate, you will maintain quality service by enforcing quality customer service standards; analyzing and resolving work quality and customer service problems; and identifying trends and recommending system improvements.
  • You will maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications;
    establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices and participating in professional societies.
  • You will submit monthly and quarterly success statements/task sheets showing your work deliverables to the Managing Associate of the Law Firm.
  • You will perform any other duties assigned by the Managing Associate, Administrator General, Managing Director or the Directors
    including the following duties:

Key Responsibilities

Legal services

  • You understand that as a Junior Associate working as a lawyer within the employment of the Group, you report to the Managing Associate in relations to all matters specific to your work as a lawyer and that you agree to work on any cases assigned to you by the Managing Associate or the Managing Director.
  • You will advise clients of the Law Firm concerning business transactions, claim liability, advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations.
  • You will interpret laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses.
  • You will analyze the probable outcomes of cases, using knowledge of legal precedents.
  • You will evaluate findings and develop strategies and arguments in preparation for presentation of cases in court.
  • You will gather evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by such means as interviewing clients and witnesses to ascertain the facts of a case.
  • You will represent clients of the Law Firm in court or before government agencies.
  • You will examine legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting a lawsuit.
  • You will argue motions, meet with judges and question witnesses during the course of a trial.
  • You will present evidence to defend clients or prosecute defendants in criminal or civil litigation.
  • You will study Constitutions, statutes, decisions, regulations, and directives of quasi-judicial bodies to determine ramifications for cases.
  • You will prepare and draft legal documents, such as wills, deeds, patent applications, mortgages, leases, and contracts.
  • You will prepare legal briefs and opinions, and file appeals in court.
  • You will negotiate settlements of civil disputes.
  • You will confer with colleagues with specialties in appropriate areas of legal issue to establish and verify bases for legal proceedings.
  • You will search for and examine public and other legal records to write opinions.
  • You will supervise legal assistants like law clerks and support staff.
  • You will perform administrative and management functions related to the practice of law.

Client and Case Management

  • You will assist the Managing Associate in the planning and management of cases.
    You can recommend new cases to the Managing Associate and/or the Managing.
  • You understand that for all other matters such as human resource, finance, administration, security, and logistics, you report to the Administrator General and/or the Managing Director.

Report writing

  • You will be required to attend meetings, report on meetings with clients, and other work related gatherings assigned to you by the
    Managing Associate or the Managing Director.
  • You will be required to secure all your work related documentations in soft and/or hard copies and get soft copies or scanned hard copies stored in Electronic Reference Suite (ERS) and Server.

Teamwork

  • You will be required to work as a team player to meet Group goals.
  • You will work closely with teams, including project teams, legal teams, and other researchers.
  • You agree to work conscientiously and professionally with your co-workers and that any work related disputes will not affect work output.

Experience & Skills

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in law practice, work in a corporate environment or other relevant post qualification experience.
  • Excellent ability to write and communicate clearly and synthesize meetings, reports, briefing papers, etc.
  • Must be ready and willing to work the typical 8am-5pm work schedule, weekends and away from his/her base, if need be
  • Must be ready and willing to be mentored
  • Proficient in Microsoft packages and Database systems, and Internet as a research tool.
  • A team player, ability to multitask and work in cross-functional fast- paced environment with the pressure of multiple deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as required.
  • Must demonstrate strong capacities to lead a team.
  • Demonstrate ability to work on own initiative with minimal supervision.

Excellent analytical skills.

  • Must hold a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) and a license to practice at the Ghana Bar. Any other qualification in addition to this will be an added advantage.
  • Must have between 1-5 years’ post-qualification experience particularly in mainstream litigation, and an in-depth knowledge of corporate and commercial law.
  • Postgraduate qualifications and experience in corporate and commercial related fields would be an advantage.
  • Must not be above 30years at the time of applying.

Remuneration: GHS 24,000 – 36,000 per annum
